ELECTRICITY USAGE MONITOR

Bedford’s three libraries are each recipients of a “Kill-A-Watt EZ”, an Electricity Usage Monitor. Katonah Village, Bedford Hills and Bedford Village Libraries were presented with these monitors by the Town of Bedford Energy Advisory Panel as part of the town’s “Twenty by 2020” campaign to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions via lower energy consumption.

The ‘Kill-A-Watt” device, once plugged into an appliance, can accurately measure the currant levels and tabulate consumed wattage totals. The “Kill-A-Watt” identifies which appliances are major contributors to monthly electric bills. The monitors are also capable of pinpointing “phantom” energy users: appliances that continue to use power even when they are switched “off”. They will help identify which appliances are actually worth keeping plugged in and those that might be considered for replacement.

Armed with a better understanding of electricity usage, consumers will be able to make necessary changes, thereby reducing the emission of greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere as well as reducing costs.

These devices are now available for checkout at all three Bedford libraries to current Westchester Library card holders.

MEET AUTHORS MARY KELLOGG AND JON KATZ

The Katonah Village Library is pleased to host a Meet the Author series on Sunday May 3rd at 2PM. Poet Mary Kellogg will read from her collection My Place on Earth. Photographer/author Jon Katz contributed the photos and will join her.

Former Katonah resident Mary Kellogg has been writing poems for more than half a century and has only recently decided to share her powerful and poignant work. Her poems have been described as written with an elegance and clarity that is uncommon today. They trace the personal path of finding her place on Earth. The collection is accompanied by the photographs of Jon Katz.

Living in the northeastern corner of New York on his farm called Bedlam, Mr. Katz draws inspiration from his animals that grace many of his books. Real life hospice dog Izzy, who is a central character in several of his novels will be attending this event as well.

MEET THE AUTHOR

The Katonah Village Library is pleased to have John Jay descendent and author Eve Pell read from her autobiography We Used to Own the Bronx: Memoirs of a Former Debutante as part of our Meet the Author Series. This event will be held on Tuesday, April 28 at 7:00 pm.

Born into privilege, Ms Pell’s Depression-era, Old Money family from New York, expected her to follow the traditional role of the women in her family by participating in foxhunts and house parties. However, after leaving that secure world and venturing to San Francisco in the 60’s, her eyes were opened to vastly new ideas. Among her experiences, were engaging as an activist and working with the leftist revolutionaries, the Soledad Brothers. She will share with us her self discovery and the influence of the feminist movement in her memoirs.

“Eve Pell gives us a fascinating glimpse into a secret world of wealth and privilege,” writes Jane Fonda. “Hers is an unexpected and ultimately hopeful journey of rebellion and reconciliation.”

This program is free and open to the public. There is no registration.
